The outer cover of a beehive serves as a protective roof. When placed on top of the hive, it provides extra protection, ventilation, and insulation for the honey bees. During the winter, the outer cover also helps minimize condensation inside the hive.

Wooden outer covers can be galvanized with metal, which, due to their added weight, helps them better withstand wind, rain, storms, and snow.
